And the Shofar Blew
Synopsis:
When Paul Hudson eagerly accepted the call to pastor the struggling church, he had no idea what to expect. He only hoped he could please the Lord with his plans and hard work. Together, Paul, his wife Eunice, and their son Tim packed up and moved halfway across the country to do the Lord’s work.
It didn’t take long for Paul to turn Centerville Christian Church around. Attendance was up–way up. People came to hear the charismatic Paul Hudson preach. The choir added members, and the children’s program was at an all-time high. A building program was in the works. Everything was going so well. If only his wife could see it his way. Still, he tried not to let her quiet presence disturb him.
Review:
Wow, this is a good story! It deals with many things that believers need to be on guard about and be discerning about. It also has such a great lesson in the power of prayer. In this case, the answer didn’t come overnight–far from it, but it did show that sometimes it takes much patience and persistence.
The character Paul Hudson took me by surprise. Even though I understood why he behaved the way he did and what his reason was for building a church, I found it astounding how someone could lose sight of the truth and become so blinded even though those closest to him saw his failings so clearly.
To me, Eunice was a real saint! Her faith, although it was severely tested, was what carried her through the trial of her shaky marriage as well as the other struggles she endured.
And the Shofar Blew is an eye opening story of deception and how easily entrapped we can become if we don’t know God’s word.
The Shofar, a ram’s horn, was used in Biblical times to warn of danger and be on the alert or to announce something. An example is found in the Old Testament when the children of Israel were about to go into the Promise Land and in the New Testament when it tells us that the angels will blow the shofar to announce the return of Jesus.
The book is good and Francine Rivers, as always, tells a good story with Jesus Christ at the center of all truth.
