Monster
Synopsis:
Reed Shelton organized this “survival” weekend, hired the best guide in the region, and meticulously trained, studied, and packed while encouraging his wife, Beck, to do the same. Little did they know, however, that surviving the elements would become the least of their worries.
During their first night of camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the forest. Then someone – no, something – emerges from the dense woods and begins pursuing them. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed–except for the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying his wife into the darkness.
Dependent on the efforts of a small town and band of friends, Reed knows they have little time to find Beck. Even more important, he soon realizes that they aren’t the only ones doing the hunting. Something much faster, more relentless and definitely not human has begun to hunt them.
Review:
I must admit this is a different kind of Christian novel for me even though I have read Frank Peretti’s books before.
As the synopsis above says, Reed and Beck Shelton are on a survival camping weekend. They are awakened the first night with a loud noise that sounds like a woman wailing in the woods nearby. They are frightened and are trying to get away when Beck falls and is swept away by a huge creature that leaves Reed frantic and desperately searching for his wife.
Reed tries to convince the others who come to help find her what it is they are up against as he witnessed first hand the harrowing experience that led up to her abduction.
Once you suspend your sense of belief and accept the premise of the monsters there are some suspenseful moments in the book as other people encounter the stalking creatures.
Frank Peretti tells the story using evolution versus creation. The enemy in this story is not just the creatures that are being hunted, but the people behind their existence.
Therefore, there is mystery involved as well as suspense.
Monster was a different sort of read for me and not like my usual favorites–even from Peretti. But if you like science and the great outdoors–coupled with mystery, you will find this book very entertaining.
