Synopsis:

Something strange happened to Sam Bennett this morning. He is hearing the thoughts of other people. The waitress in the coffee shop. The elevator operator in Sam’s office building. His wife, his secretary, even his pastor. Simply by looking at them, Sam can hear their heart’s deepest needs. Is he going crazy…or about to experience a miracle beyond his wildest dreams?

Review:

This is one of two complete novels by Terri Blackstock contained in the book Miracles. I’ve reviewed the other novel, The Gifted, in a separate article.

The Listener starts you thinking and…leaves you thinking! It’s about Sam Bennett, who discovers this ability to hear the thoughts of people. It is quite upsetting to him at first, but after talking with his pastor, he discovers it to be a gift from God. Sam quickly learns that what is important to God is to tell people about Jesus Christ and lead them to salvation.

It made me realize how much people need the Lord and how exciting it would be to lead many people to Christ every day the way Sam, his pastor, his wife and his friends did. However, they depended on Sam and on what he heard when he came in contact with people. He described it as hearing their deepest longings and feelings. Though we don’t have the gift like Sam had in the story, we do have the Holy Spirit who prompts us to talk to people and gives us the words to say.

This is a book about spreading the good news of Jesus and Terri Blackstock has written an interesting story to help motivate us to carry out the Great Commission. I recommend reading The Listener to open your eyes and heart to how you can further God’s kingdom by being a witness to the truth of Jesus Christ.
