A Can of Peas
Synopsis:
After the death of his grandfather, Peter Morgan and his new bride, Mae, face a life-changing decision: Should they embrace the career-chasing ambitions of their family and friends in St. Paul, or accept the absurd challenge of saving the family farm in the Minnesota countryside?
Enticed by the romance of a simple, quiet life, the Morgans set out to follow in the footsteps of Peter’s grandparents. Soon, Peter is farming around the clock, barely one step ahead of failure, as Mae struggles to find her place in Peter’s life and in the community. Will the strain of saving the farm tear their marriage apart?
Weaving together the strong threads of family and friends in a pattern of grace, forgiveness, and kindness, A Can of Peas invites you to a place where each day brings a new story and neighbors are more than just people who live down the road. Sometimes funny and often poignant, these vignettes will draw you into the reassuring rhythms of life in the heart of a close-knit community.
Review:
I didn’t really know how I would like this book when I began reading it. It didn’t take me long to get involved with the Morgan family and all the people involved in the town of Lake Emily, Minnesota. The story simply is written about a sweet young newlywed couple who takes on the challenges of farming. The people of Lake Emily, Minnesota are all kind hearted even though there are some who are watching to see how successful Peter will be at taking over his grandfather’s farm.
There isn’t any mystery or suspense in this book. It is really a little like a slice-of-life story in a farming community. In fact, the book is subtitled The story of a small town and a season of hope. It kept me reading because I instantly liked Mae and Peter and Virginia, Peter’s grandmother. Other characters introduced throughout the book were likeable and interesting as well.
You will get to know the people of Lake Emily through the unique way that Traci DePree introduces them.
The story does deal with forgiveness and heartache and has lessons of faith that I really liked. It is also about determination and commitment, but all in a very loving and down to earth way.
This is the first book I’ve read by Traci DePree, but I am sure that I will be checking out some of her other work. A Can of Peas is an interesting read, and I think you will enjoy the simple yet poignant story of Peter and Mae Morgan and all the people they encounter. It’s the first in a series and I just know I’ll be reading more.
